Cereal

I got home tonight just on 7 pm. This is late for me on a Monday as I had to pick Miss Thing up from work - her usual lift home had to go and break up with his boyfriend. I was hot, tired and hungry as were Her Majesty and Clive, who were in the car with me after being picked up before their sister. I hadn't taken anything out for dinner and was not feeling creative. Fast food? Blech - too hot and getting too late. Suck it up like I usually do and cook anyway? Fat chance. I needed something easy, something quick and something that vaguely resembled healthy.

We had cereal. The Hermit and Clive had Sultana Bran, Her Majesty had Choco Balls (and some rockmelon, aka cantelope) and I had some Vanilla Almond Crunch. Sparky wasn't too hungry after being home alone and eating a quarter of a cheesecake and a cupcake (hmmm, wonder why) and Miss Thing made herself some cinnamon toast.

Cereal for dinner. For a few moments I felt guilty over this - after all, shouldn't I do more to provide a decent meal for my family? Was a bowl of cereal really dinner?

Hell yeah! I suddenly remembered many dinners of cold cereal on a hot summer night and it was sweet. I mean that literally, as like many kids I had a taste for super sweet cereals... with one exception:

I'd like to point out that if Cheerios (and the American version, not the Australian one which is coated in some sweet stuff) didn't cost me over $10 a box from USA Foods I'd still eat it all the time.

Now Momma Mooselet worked super long hours when I was a kid - for all my bitching I've got nothing on my mother - and most of our weeknight dinners were macaroni with her special sauce (a can of tomato soup and a can of tomato paste), cans of Chef Boyardee or Dinty Moore beef stew, and cereals. And as I thought about it tonight, not once did I ever remember feeling deprived back then. Except when Gabe got more meatballs than me in his Spaghetti-Os & Meatballs, then I pissed and moaned.

So I kicked the guilt I was starting to feel in the ass and sat down at the table with my husband and kids to eat the best bowl of cereal I'd had in ages.

There are plenty of times that cereal sounds like a fine meal to me too.

Aha, I hasten to inform you that MM still has a bowl of cereal, usually Cheerios, for supper at times. And, once in a great while I'll do the same. Sometimes we just aren't in the mood to cook, or nothing in the fridge or pantry seems appealing, or we just can't seem to decide on anything in particular.
So beware all ye who dare to descend upon our doorstep next Summer. Our little B & B may only be one B.

This brings back memories of raiding your H St. pantry! That, and spaghetti with ketchup during that miserable, wet girl scout camping trip.

And what is wrong with a bowl of cereal? Especially Cheerio's - one of my favorites. And btw, what's wrong with one of the rest of the gang cooking some nights? Both you and Gabe could manage a meal on occasion. Although, I do remember that you would rather do the clean up than cook. I recall with some clarity you remarking to me that you didn't need to learn how to cook because you were going to hire someone to do it when you were old enough.
I did make some effort to cook most nights when Miss Thing was here, but I think (aside from the stuffed shells) she preferred mac and cheese - a great stand-by. You can toss in cut up hot dogs and add a frozen veggie if you need to get fancy.
And I always counted the meatballs i the spaghetti-O's - I ate the extra one if it didn't come out even. I tried cutting it in half but then you would argue over who got the biggest half.

I can't stand cooking. So time consuming and mess making - then you always get one of the kids who doesn't like it anyway!

Our 10 year old loves cereal and will often have it for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner whenever he can.

I love the bottles you can buy now that you just add to meat, pasta and rice. I add extra vegies and it's a quick and easy meal. We take turns because we have no set meal time due to work and sport, etc.

Meh, whatever works I say.

I prefer to clean up rather than cook too.
